The Make-A-Meal Program

Research suggests that community members and families tend to bond when creating, cooking, and gathering to eat a healthy, tasty meal together. Unfortunately, many food insecure families (up to 30% in some neighborhoods) do not have access to a grocery store within three miles and do not have transportation to venture farther than they can walk or bike.  A number of services such as UBER will not deliver food or pick up residents because of the crime rate of the community. As a result, many residents are forced to rely on Dollar Stores and/or fast food franchises for their food needs.  As a result, up to two generations of families have not grown up cooking their own meals.

The Make-A-Meal Recipe Program provides food insecure families with community-tested recipes and the ingredients and support to prepare them. Each of our recipe boxes provides  a complete, balanced meal for a family of four that can be assembled in 20 minutes and costs between $15-20 per family. These boxes offer an alternative to the generic staple boxes many organizations currently provide. Yet, many in food insecure communities do not like or know how to prepare tasty meals from the ingredients in these boxes.  Thus, a good bit of food is wasted by recipients.
In our Wilmington pilot program,  95% of community members chose our recipe boxes over generic food boxes.
