What is ACT-SO?
Currently, supporting our local New Hanover County NAACP ACT-SO competition is the primary focus of Pie Lab NC. ACT-SO stands for Afro-Academic Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. Nationally, it began thirty-nine years ago and remains the primary youth initiative of the national NAACP organization. ACT-SO is a free year-long mentoring and educational enrichment program for high school students of African descent. All local gold medal winners are awarded an all expense paid trip to nationals (next year in San Antonio) to compete for scholarships in 32 categories, including drawing, painting, sculpture, health and medicine, photography, math, physics, computer science, chemistry, biology, poetry, short stories, plays, oratory, instrumental music, choral music, dance (contemporary, classical/ballet/traditional), entrepreneurship, culinary, and more.
How to Get Involved....
If you or your organization would like to provide support for or volunteer to help with ACT-SO, please contact Anne York at anneyork@creighton.edu (402-216-7750) or Deborah Dicks Maxwell at nhcnaacp.gmail.com. If you are interested in participating, please join us for an organizational meeting Saturday, Sept. 16 from 2-3:30 at St. Stephens AME church on Red Cross St. to learn more.
Volunteer categories include serving as a mentor, expert category judge, working on the Saturday, Feb. 24 awards banquet, helping with the administration of our local competition on Feb. 24, fundraising, and marketing. A mentor organizational meeting will be scheduled after our Sept. 16 meeting, as we learn in which categories our students are interested in competing. The ACT-SO national competition will be held in late July, 2018.
